All About Laparoscopic Urology Surgery | Dr Sandeep Nunia

Today, thanks to technological advancements, we have access to information that is more accurate than ever before in almost every aspect of life. Of course, we have also made progress in the field of medicine. In the surgical field, where before there were so many risks one could imagine, we now have precise diagnoses and ways to ensure the most perfect outcome. One of the new and much used surgical methods nowadays is Laparoscopic Urology Surgery.

What is Laparoscopic Urology Surgery?

If we go back in time 10 to 15 years ago, we had to do major surgery for even a minor problem. We had to make a big cut on the body. It was very painful and required a long period of convalescence. But nowadays, most surgeries can be done through a small incision on the body.

This is a surgical approach in which the operation is performed through a small incision instead of the traditional way of making a big cut on the patient’s body. It is also known by other names which are said to be “key-hole surgery” or “minimally invasive surgery (MIS)“.

Merits and Demerits of Laparoscopic Urology Surgery

In general, laparoscopic incision shortens the recovery period after the operation so the patient can return to his or her activities of daily living as soon as possible. Specifically, laparoscopic surgery reduces blood loss during the surgery, reduces the amount of pain after the surgery, reduces the requirement for painkillers after the surgery, and shortens the hospital stay after the surgery.

It is also a low-risk surgery, and there are fewer chances for infection. Though very few to no cases are heard about something like needles or forceps being left behind in the body, with this method, there’s no possibility for something to be left inside the body. The cost of laparoscopy urology incision is less.

One of the disadvantages of laparoscopic surgery is that not all doctors are initially trained to perform it. A laparoscopic surgeon needs to go through very rigorous training to perform high-quality surgery of laparoscopic in urology for his patients. So It is suggested that you look for an experienced Laparoscopic surgeon.

Another disadvantage is that not all diseases can be treated by this method. For example, in open heart surgery or incision, we can’t use a laparoscopic technique or for knee replacement. It is also available only in limited areas.

The technological demands during laparoscopic urology surgery also mean that the duration of the operation in the urology theatre is usually longer compared to the traditional open approach, so patients also need a certain level of fitness to have laparoscopic surgery.

How is Laparoscopic Urology Surgery performed?

Other than the basic equipment of the surgery, laparoscopic also requires some dedicated machines in urology like a camera at the endoscope, a light source since there is no light in the body, a video console to take the output from the camera, a display for doctors to see what is happening inside the body, and lastly, an insufflator to inject carbon dioxide inside the body.

First, we make a puncture in the body and insert a trocar, which is like a long pipe to place the camera, scope, and other things so that they won’t move or get out of the body. Then after it, we put in a rigid scope that has two connections on the outside end. On one of the connections, we put the light source, and on the other, we connected our camera. This camera is connected to the video console and then to the display. With this setup, doctors are finally able to see what’s happening inside the body.

Now, through another incision, we put in instruments to perform the treatment. With one hand on the light source and camera and the other hand on the instrument, the doctor performs the urology incision.

A third hole is used to connect the insulator, which injects carbon dioxide into the body to inflate it and maintain the air pressure, which increases the space and makes it easier to operate. For surgeries other than laparoscopic urology surgery, the removal of kidney stones, or other conditions near this area, we don’t even need to cut.
