From the last two decades, kidney stone treatment has brought drastic improvements and dynamics. Many new advanced technologies were introduced for the treatment of kidney stones. Ureteroscopic Holmium Laser Lithotripsy is the latest, popular, and painless procedure that is effective for kidney stone treatment without making an incision in the body. In this procedure, a small telescope and Holmium laser are used to break the stones into tiny fragments which are stuck in the urinary tract that can be easily removed through normal urination. This method is used to treat stones from the ureter, bladder, kidney, and urethra. Now with this easier method kidney stone treatment is no longer required to treat with the surgical incision. Rare cases are exceptional but mostly nowadays kidney stones are treated through laser surgery.

Types of lithotripsy surgery

With the help of Lithotripsy, the treatment of kidney stones has become less invasive, painless, and effective also. The lithotripsy technique is used for treating stones in the kidney and ureter which does not require normal surgery. There are two different methods of Lithotripsy. Both methods help in relieving pain immediately and are also effective. According to their data both have got a high success rate in the treatment of Kidney stones.

Extracorporeal Shock wave Lithotripsy is the common method of lithotripsy for kidney stone treatment This method is opted easily by people to cure kidney stones. The procedure is simple and clear: outside-the-body ultrasound shock waves are focused on kidney stones and attacked. The shattered stone fragments can be excreted in the urine. There is no need for anesthesia because this procedure is painless, but it can be used for minor relief. Although the ESWL method of Lithotripsy can remove all stones in the upper ureter and kidney, it cannot treat all types of kidney stones. Furthermore, Steinstrasse, a complication that causes the ureter to become blocked by the collection of stone fragments after the procedure, is a risk. As a result, stone fragments are sometimes left in the body, requiring further treatment.

One of the more recent methods of laser kidney stone treatment is ureteroscopic Holmium Laser Lithotripsy. It is also preferred by patients and can be easily available in most hospitals.

A holmium laser is used to break kidney stones into fragments. In the procedure, Spinal anesthesia is used because this procedure requires the insertion of a scope and it is minimally invasive. On the other hand, the procedure does not require any small cuts and is completely painless.

When the scope reaches the kidney, a holmium laser with a power of 100 Watts is used. The stones are broken to dust, and the particles are expelled when the patient urinates. This method is normally used to remove stones from the size of 4mm till to 20 mm in diameter, situated in the ureter, bladder, kidney, and urethra.

Patients have benefited from both of these treatments. But still just to differentiate them here is the comparison.

ESWL helps in removing all stones from the upper part of the urinary tract which considers the ureter and kidney while UHLL is normally used to remove large stones from the ureter, bladder, kidney, and urethra. However, The patients who have gone through ESWL might develop Steinstress which can further cause the ureter to be blocked which does not occur in Ureteroscopic Holmium Laser Lithotripsy.

Advantages of Ureteroscopic lithotripsy over Holmium laser

  • UHLL is the most effective, safe, and least invasive procedure to remove kidney stones.
  •  It offers much more results irrespective of stone size and location.
  •  This surgery is done under general anesthesia which is completely painless and discomfort-free.
  •  UHLL has the power to make the  biggest stone into the smallest particles
  •  Recovery is fast with UHLL.
  • No risk of developing Steinstrasse.

Due to bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle, kidney stones are now a common problem. These methods of kidney stones are effective, and they help reduce pain immediately. Both methods have a high success rate in curing kidney stones.
